The Cast of Tom Hoper's LES MISERABLES Will Sing Live On Set | Collider
A Source told the Sun the following…
Unlike most film musicals, the cast will record their vocals live on camera rather than go into a studio first then mime on film to the pre-recorded vocal… First they have to learn the complex songs, then they’ll have to get it right on set in front of the other stars and crew.
This kind of thing really annoys me. It bothers me because if it’s done well and the film is successful they will run around saying, “See, they did it so well you can’t even tell that the vocals weren’t prerecorded.” To which I’ll be forced to respond, “Then why the hell did you do it that way?” That’s like a director chopping off a limb, making a film that’s indistinguishable from that which any other director has made and then saying, “See, I’m so good I can make an average film with less limbs than other directors.”
The things people do to make films should advance the art - move it FORWARD and BEYOND what we already have, not produce the exact same results with a handicap. People choosing to watch Les Mis as a film likely do not give a shit about the authenticity of theatrical performance that you used to capture the scene. If they did, they’d go see the play.
