Why the hate for “The Voice?”
Look, I’m obviously biased, so take this as you will, but I don’t get all the hate for “The Voice.” I mean, I hate the sob stories like everyone else. I can’t stand when every TV show is “I’m doing this for my dead brother” or “my sick mom would be so happy to see me come this far.” I’m not saying I don’t feel sympathy for people who are suffering, but stop milking it - I guarantee it’s not generating higher ratings. I looked the other way until I noticed it was becoming a trend Food Network’s “Chopped.” Just stop it.
But putting that aside, The Voice is different than American Idol. Obviously, it’s kind of spun as a very similar premise, but it’s totally different. What we’re watching with the blind auditions ISN’T the start of the process for these people. For these folks their journey started YEARS ago. It’s a look at people who haven’t been able to hit it big yet exploring another road to success. And that’s OK. It’s FINE. Every show doesn’t need to be about completely civilians stumbling into an American Idol audition and being lucky enough to have Steve Tyler think their voice is “unique” enough to move on to the Hollywood round.
This is about people who are already talented and who already have made progress in their chosen career trying to do something more with it. And even sprinkled in there are people who are complete amateurs. So why the hate for the show that isn’t exactly the same as something else?
